Roy Austin wird VP of Civil Rights bei Facebook

Facebook verkündete, dass der Jurist und Menschenrechts-Aktivist Roy Austin ab dem 19. Januar 2021 die Rolle des ersten VP of Civil Rights and Deputy General Counsel bei Facebook antreten wird. Jennifer Newstead, General Counsel bei Facebook, sagt dazu:

I am delighted to welcome Roy to Facebook as our VP of Civil Rights. Roy has proved throughout his career that he is a passionate and principled advocate for civil rights — whether it is in the courtroom or the White House. I know he will bring the same wisdom, integrity and dedication to Facebook. It’s hard to imagine anyone better qualified to help us strengthen and advance civil rights on our platform and in our company.

Austin arbeitet bereits seit 25 Jahren als Jurist und Anwalt für Bürgerrecht in den USA. 2014 bis 2019 arbeitete Austin mit der US-Regierung zusammen und war als Deputy Assistant Teil des White House Domestic Policy Councils. Bei Facebook soll er nun eine unternehmensinterne „Civil Rights Organization“ aufbauen. Der Jurist sagt selbst zu seiner neuen Position bei Facebook:

I am excited to join Facebook at this moment when there is a national and global awakening happening around civil rights. Technology plays a role in nearly every part of our lives, and it’s important that it be used to overcome the historic discrimination and hate which so many underrepresented groups have faced, rather than to exacerbate it. I could not pass up the opportunity to join a company whose products are used by so many and which impacts the civil rights and liberties of billions of people, in order to help steer a better way forward.

Facebook will sich mehr für Bürgerrechte stark machen

Dass Facebook offensichtlich plant, 2021 eine aktivere Rolle in bürgerrechtlichen Belangen zu spielen, ist nicht verwunderlich. Schließlich hat sich im vergangenen Jahr gezeigt, dass eine klare politische Positionierung der Tech-Firmen sich meist positiv auf das Image ausübt. So unterstütze Facebook im vergangenen Jahr nicht nur die Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung, sondern ergriff auch in diesem Jahr aktiv Maßnahmen nach dem Sturm auf das Capitol.

Facebook war eine der erste Plattformen, die den US-Präsidenten Donald Trump sperrte – und das auf unbestimmte Zeit. Jetzt geht die Social-Media-Plattform sogar noch einen Schritt weiter und entfernt Content, der Phrasen wie „Stop the Steal“ enthält. Diese spielen darauf an, dass die US-Präsidentschaftswahl 2020 von den US-Demokraten manipuliert und Trump der Sieg gestohlen wurde. Da es hierfür allerdings keinerlei Beweise gibt, verstoße derartiger Content gegen die Facebook Richtlinien zum Umgang mit Desinformationen, so Facebooks Co-CEO Sheryl Sandberg. Facebook erklärt weiter:

We are now removing content containing the phrase “stop the steal” under our Coordinating Harm policy from Facebook and Instagram. We removed the original Stop the Steal group in November and have continued to remove Pages, groups and events that violate any of our policies, including calls for violence. We’ve been allowing robust conversations related to the election outcome and that will continue. But with continued attempts to organize events against the outcome of the US presidential election that can lead to violence, and use of the term by those involved in Wednesday’s violence in DC, we’re taking this additional step in the lead up to the inauguration.

Welche Rolle der Tech-Riese künftig in öffentlichen und politischen Diskursen einnehmen wird, bleibt abzuwarten. Die Berufung Austins als VP of Civil Rights sowie die angepassten Richtlinien der Plattform sind allerdings ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung.
