Cologne, 14 September 2015: Improve Digital and AppNexus, two leading technology companies in the programmatic landscape, are teaming up to host a Women In Tech networking event at DMEXCO to highlight the importance of diversity in the sector.
The breakfast event will take place at the AppNexus Booth, C026-C028 in hall 7 at 9:30 am on 17 September during DMEXCO, the leading global conference for the digital industry. Hosted by Improve Digital co-founders Janneke Niessen and Joelle Frijters, alongside AppNexus leaders Doina Harris, VP of the Advertiser Technology Group (ATG) in EMEA, and Catherine Williams, Chief Data Scientist, the event will explore how to encourage young girls and women to pursue careers in technology, and will be attended by senior women from across the industry.
Improve Digital is run by two women passionate about addressing the gender imbalance in the tech industry. This led them in 2013 to launch Inspiring Fifty – a successful pan-European initiative that identifies, encourages, develops and showcases females in leadership positions within the technology sector. In June this year, Niessen also launched a fictional novel ‘Project Prep’ aimed at 9-15 year old girls, highlighting how cool and exciting a career path in tech can be. The novel launched in the Netherlands and is being rolled out globally over the next 12 months.
The subject is also one of importance to AppNexus who partners with Girls Who Code (GWC), a program that works to inspire, educate, and equip girls with the skills and resources to pursue opportunities in computing fields.
Each year, AppNexus hosts 20 high school students as part of GWC’s Summer Immersion Program, a 7-week intensive computer science course that embeds classrooms in technology companies and universities across the U.S. Over 50 AppNexus employees took part in 2015, running presentations, workshops and fields trips and providing ongoing mentorship to the girls. AppNexus also partners with Girls Who Code year-round, hosting their staff at our office and partnering on various initiatives designed to increase the number of women in tech jobs.
Inspiring Fifty co-founders Janneke Niessen and Joelle Frijters said: “DMEXCO brings together the global digital industry to discuss the challenges and opportunities across the sector. This provides the perfect backdrop for an event focusing on how to encourage more young girls and women to pursue careers in this vibrant sector. We’re delighted to be partnering with AppNexus to explore this important issue with senior women from across the industry.”
AppNexus leaders Doina Harris and Catherine Williams said, “AppNexus is deeply committed to supporting women in the technology field, and we’re excited to be at dmexco, alongside Improve Digital, to further explore this timely and exciting topic.”
